Trump Considers MOAB on Iran Targets to End War?
US military planners have prepared contingency options that could include the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb—known as the MOAB or “Mother of All Bombs”—against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear-related sites such as Pickaxe Mountain, according to CNN and other outlets citing anonymous US officials.
These plans would apply if President Donald Trump orders resumed combat operations, with timing discussed relative to the November midterm elections.
In a Newsmax interview, Trump explicitly ruled out nuclear weapons, stating “I wouldn’t use nuclear. We don’t have to. We’re the greatest nuclear power in the world.”
He clarified that the MOAB “is not nuclear… This is just an extremely large bomb,” while declining to confirm or deny any authorization for its use. He separately noted that the US is evaluating Pickaxe Mountain, saying “We may have to go there… We’ll knock it out fast.”
The White House has said it does not comment on sensitive military plans that may or may not exist, while reiterating that all options remain open to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. Officials and analysts have noted the MOAB is the largest non-nuclear munition in the US arsenal (roughly 21,600 pounds, designed for a massive surface air-burst) and was last used in 2017 in Afghanistan under Trump’s first administration.
Sources have questioned its effectiveness against deeply buried, hardened facilities protected by rock layers, describing some options in planning discussions as more symbolic or area-denial oriented.
No public decision or order to employ the weapon has been confirmed. The discussion occurs amid the ongoing conflict and US efforts to prevent Iranian nuclear capabilities.
