Chip Stock Sell-Off: Lam Research Warning, Meta and Nvidia Sink Nasdaq 2.6%; SK Hynix Halts Solidigm IPO

A chip stocks sell-off hit Wall Street on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 6.7% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.6% to 26,008.86 at the 4 p.m. ET close, Reuters reported. The S&P 500 lost 1.21% to 7,663.43, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.02% to 52,867.98.

The slide followed a supply warning from Lam Research Corp., the Fremont, California, maker of chipmaking equipment, plus a 7% drop in Meta Platforms Inc. after earnings that revived doubts about the cost of artificial intelligence. Nvidia Corp. fell 4.4% and was the biggest single drag on the S&P 500, the Associated Press reported.

The selling spread to Asia on Friday. South Korea's Kospi fell more than 3% in early trading, SBS News reported, and SK Hynix Inc. suspended plans to list its U.S. flash-memory unit Solidigm on the Nasdaq. The Kospi later recovered to close up 0.3% at 5,550.30, The Korea Times reported, as SK Hynix shares rebounded.

What Happened

Lam Research reported record results on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Revenue reached $8.22 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 27, the company said in its earnings release, and it guided to $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million, for the December quarter. Chief Executive Tim Archer credited AI demand, saying "our focus on operational execution helped Lam deliver record revenue, profit, and earnings per share."

The market focused instead on remarks from Chief Financial Officer Doug Bettinger on the earnings call. According to a transcript published by The Motley Fool, Bettinger said supply "just got a little bit tight in the quarter."

"this revenue guide would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints." — Doug Bettinger, CFO of Lam Research, on the Oct. 21 earnings call

Archer also cited "clean room space availability and supply chain constraints for certain components" in the company's 2027 outlook, but said "this is nothing like" the shortages of the pandemic era, per the transcript. He put preliminary 2027 wafer fab equipment spending at more than $200 billion.

Chip stocks fell before the open on Thursday. Lam dropped as much as 10% and Applied Materials Inc. fell 6%, Yahoo Finance reported at 9:32 a.m. ET. By the close, AMD, Intel, Marvell and Sandisk had each fallen more than 8%, according to Reuters. The iShares Semiconductor ETF fell nearly 7% and a triple-leveraged chip fund lost more than 20%, StockTwits reported.

The selling came as Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang spoke about financing for AI cloud companies known as neoclouds. "The demand for the neoclouds is off the charts," Huang said in a CNBC interview, Business Insider reported. He added that "there's a scarcity of capital" and said, "That's going to get solved."

Huang also said "what is missing in the middle is the working capital to fuel that growth," according to The Telegraph. CoreWeave Inc., a neocloud that relies on Nvidia chips, fell 10.1% amid worries about its debt, AP reported.

Meta added to the losses. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26%, but negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion, Meta said in its results release. It set 2026 capital spending at $135 billion to $145 billion and approved a non-voting share class. Reuters called the cash shortfall Meta's first cash outflow in more than a decade.

The Meta shares closed at $648.85, down 6.98%, Yahoo Finance's live coverage showed. A day earlier, a New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay the state $25 billion in a consumer-privacy case, CBS News reported. Meta said it expects to "prevail on appeal." The market coverage reviewed by Ecker Geopolitics tied Thursday's drop to the earnings and AI spending, not to the judgment.

"Investors are starting to realize that there are some holes in the AI story," Paul Nolte of Murphy & Sylvest told Reuters.

Nvidia also published the Berlin keynote Huang gave on Oct. 21 on its official YouTube channel. It shows his AI infrastructure pitch on the eve of the sell-off.

Who's Involved

Lam Research: A U.S. supplier of chip-factory tools whose warning set off the sell-off. Bettinger said that China made up 35% of revenue in the September quarter and would be "meaningfully down" in December, according to the call transcript.

Nvidia and Jensen Huang: Nvidia is the largest U.S. company by market value. Huang argued that neocloud demand is strong and that capital shortages will ease, while Nvidia works to make its hardware a "financeable asset," per Business Insider.

Meta Platforms: Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said the quarter delivered "major milestones" toward "personal superintelligence," per the company release.

SK Hynix: The South Korean memory chipmaker said Solidigm's growth potential was unchanged but that it was reassessing whether an IPO now best serves shareholders, Seoul Economic Daily reported.

The Ground Picture

Before Thursday, the semiconductor index had risen more than 60% in 2026, according to Tech Times.

The Nasdaq's 2.6% fall was its steepest daily drop since early June, and the S&P 500 had its worst day since July, Reuters and AP reported. Most U.S. stocks rose, which kept the Dow slightly higher.

Geopolitical Players

South Korea: The Kospi stood at 5,403.32, down 2.4%, early Friday, AP reported, and fell more than 4% in morning trading before reversing. It closed up 0.3% at 5,550.30, The Korea Times reported. Earlier in the session, Samsung Electronics fell 2.6% and SK Hynix fell as much as 3%, Investing.com reported. By the close, SK Hynix was up 4.42% at 1,277,000 won and Samsung was up 0.47%, per The Korea Times. The Solidigm decision followed comments from South Korea's Financial Services Commission and Financial Supervisory Service during parliamentary audits that dual listings are subject to regulation, SBS reported. Shareholders also objected, KED Global reported.

Japan: The Nikkei 225 fell 1.7% to 61,825.26 in early Friday trading, AP reported.

China: The Shanghai Composite fell 1.3%, and the CSI 300 entered a bear market Thursday, Investing.com reported. China is a major buyer of U.S. chip tools.

Taiwan: TSMC, which makes most of the world's advanced AI chips, is exposed to any slowdown in AI spending. Ecker Geopolitics could not independently verify the Taiex's Friday move from a credible source at publication time.

What It Means for the United States

The following is Ecker Geopolitics analysis.

Benefits and opportunities

  • Lam's problem is too much demand, not too little. Record revenue and a 2027 forecast above $200 billion show that U.S. toolmakers remain at the center of the global chip buildout.

  • Falling Treasury yields offer some relief to borrowers. The 10-year yield fell to 4.97% from above 5.30% earlier in the month, AP reported.

  • China's falling share of Lam's revenue would reduce U.S. dependence on a strategic rival as a customer, which matches the aim of export controls. Enforcement continues, including a guilty plea in a scheme to divert Nvidia AI servers to China.

Risks and dangers

  • Supply bottlenecks in chip tools could slow the U.S. effort to build AI data centers ahead of China.

  • Oil above $110 linked to the Iran war threatens to keep inflation high. After the biggest jump in producer prices since 2022, Reuters said markets were pricing a possible quarter-point Fed hike before year-end.

  • A financing squeeze on neoclouds such as CoreWeave could spread into credit markets and retirement accounts heavy in AI stocks.
