A small boat attached two limpet mines to the hull of the Panama-flagged oil tanker Louise 1 in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, setting its engine room on fire about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations center (UKMTO) and maritime security sources cited by Reuters. All 27 Indian seafarers aboard were reported safe.
Maritime sources described it as the first successful limpet mine attack in the strait since the U.S.-Iran war began in February. The same day, U.S. Central Command commander Adm. Brad Cooper briefed President Donald Trump at the White House on military options against Iran, The Wall Street Journal reported, as Washington signals a possible "short, intense campaign" after the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
This is a follow-up to Ecker Geopolitics' reporting on Qatar's seven-day draft deal and U.S. warnings to Gulf states and Iran's rejection of Qatar's ideas. The new developments: a confirmed limpet mine strike, the Cooper briefing, and Brent crude above $117.

What Happened
The attack came as the Louise 1 was outbound through the strait. A small boat approached, attached two mines and left, according to maritime security sources cited by Reuters, Gulf News reported. The blasts started a fire in the engine room that temporarily disabled the ship.
UKMTO reported that the crew was safe, the fire had been extinguished and the vessel was continuing its journey. India's shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed all 27 Indian seafarers were safe and said New Delhi was coordinating with the ship's management company, India Shipping News reported.
Two maritime sources said Iran attempted a similar limpet attack in September, but the devices did not detonate, Gulf News reported. The Critical Threats Project and the Institute for the Study of War assessed that Iranian forces used fast attack craft to place the mines, according to their Oct. 30 Iran Update. Iran has not claimed the attack, and Ecker Geopolitics could not independently confirm who placed the mines.
The IRGC Navy separately claimed that three oil tankers exploded and caught fire on what it called an "unauthorized route," including a supertanker it said hit a naval mine, ABC News reported. CBS News reported an Iranian claim of four tankers; the counts differ. It is unclear whether the Louise 1 was among them, and the U.S. military has previously called IRGC mine claims "false."
Greece-based risk firm Marisks called the attack "a significant security concern," Fox News reported.

In Washington, Cooper made a rare White House visit Thursday with Hegseth and Caine to brief Trump on military options, The Wall Street Journal reported, according to The National News Desk. The U.S. naval blockade was also discussed, Just Security's summary of the Journal report said.
Trump said in a Friday radio interview that the war "is going to be over very soon." At a Florida rally he said, "We may do another little Epic Fury," musing about strikes like those that started the war in February, TNND reported.

Who's Involved
- Iran / IRGC: Says it targets vessels violating its movement restrictions and challenged the U.S. to prove its demining claims, Gulf News reported. Tehran says lifting the U.S. blockade and easing sanctions remain core conditions, according to Tasnim as cited by CBS News.
- United States / CENTCOM: Cooper said U.S. forces have escorted more than 3,000 commercial vessels and about 1.5 billion barrels of oil since summer, per CTP-ISW.
- Qatar: Its mediators returned to Tehran Friday. Qatar's U.N. envoy, Sheikha Alya, called at the Security Council for the "unconditional reopening" of the strait, ABC News reported.
- India: 27 of its nationals crewed the Louise 1; the Liberia-flagged VLCC Arzanah, hit by a projectile on Oct. 29, carried two more, India Shipping News reported.
- Congress: Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called the administration's plan "insane," TNND reported.
Weapons and Military Assets
- Limpet mines (confirmed by UKMTO and maritime sources): Small explosive charges attached to a hull. Two were used on the Louise 1, placed from a small boat. Who deployed them is assessed, not confirmed.
- Fast attack craft (assessed): CTP-ISW assessed Iranian fast attack craft delivered the mines.
- Naval mines (claimed): The IRGC claims tankers hit sea mines; CENTCOM says it has cleared the mines Iran laid at the war's start.
- Projectile (reported): UKMTO reported a separate tanker struck by a projectile while exiting via the southern route, CBS News reported.
- U.S. carrier forces: Two carrier strike groups operate in the Arabian Sea, according to reporting compiled by Time News; Ecker Geopolitics could not independently verify the current deployment.
The OSINT Picture
The primary open-source record is UKMTO incident reporting, which placed the attack about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab. CTP-ISW cited UKMTO's post on X and Reuters' sourcing. Confidence: high that two limpet mines struck the Louise 1; moderate on Iranian responsibility, which rests on analytic assessment and Iran's past use of the tactic in 2017 and 2019.
Public AIS ship-tracking data for the Louise 1 was not available in the sources reviewed. The IRGC's claims of three additional tanker mine strikes are unconfirmed; Iranian state media is cited here only as what Tehran claims.
Gulf News noted the 2019 attacks off Fujairah, where an industry assessment found limpet mines were "highly likely" used against four vessels and named a "state actor" as the likely culprit without naming Iran. Earlier attacks are covered in our reporting on the IRGC's claim of seven tankers hit.
Geopolitical Players
- Gulf states: U.S. officials told Arab Gulf leaders to "be prepared for a short, intense campaign after the midterm elections," the WSJ reported, per TNND.
- Saudi Arabia and the Houthis: The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a drone over the Mecca region; Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree denied attacking Saudi Arabia, saying the group targets only oil facilities and military bases, CBS News reported. The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh ordered non-emergency personnel to leave, per CTP-ISW.
- China and Russia: Reuters reported an Iranian network has imported Chinese chemicals and Russian detonators despite the blockade, CTP-ISW noted.
- Europe: French President Emmanuel Macron blamed France's cost-of-living crisis on "the war in Iran, the blockade of Hormuz, the rise in fuel prices," ABC News reported.
What It Means for the United States
Benefits and opportunities
- CENTCOM's escort mission has moved more than 3,000 ships through the strait, a sign U.S. naval power is keeping most Gulf oil flowing.
- Qatari mediation, coordinated with Washington according to a Reuters source cited by CBS News, keeps a diplomatic exit open.
Risks and dangers
- Limpet mines are cheap and deniable. Analysis: a renewed campaign could raise war-risk insurance and shipping costs even if most transits succeed.
- Oil above $117 feeds U.S. inflation; Saxo Bank's Ole Hansen said the market is "getting increasingly spooked as we approach the midterms," per Reuters via Fox News.
- Renewed strikes could put Americans in the region at risk; Murphy warned Iran has said it would target Americans directly. The Pentagon's death toll in the war stands at 23, CBS News reported.
- The war's cost has passed $47 billion, according to Pentagon figures cited by TNND.
